Bird Bath : Make your Cockatiel Clean and Healthy

It sound strange but I would like to state it here that bathing is essential to your pet cockatiel if they are house indoor. This become a must if the cockatiel didn’t have any  access to other source of moisturizer.

There were many reason why we should bath our pet cockatiel. One of them is it encourage the pet cockatiel to clean himself. When the cockatiel is wet, they tend to preen their plumage to make it dry and in the process itself, they will clean their plumage. The moisturizer (water) also will clean the birds body.

Bathing also will reduce the dusk create by the cockatiel. Cockatiel may differ from some other parrot, say ring neck parakeet, where cockatiel plumage will create some sort of dusk. If you keep only one cockatiel, the dusk is not so obvious. However, if you keep many birds, this may become a big problem for you. This is because the dusk may harm you when you inhale. This will become more serious if you have some sort of respiratory problem. Bathing can reduce this dusk because when the birds bath, the dusk will get wet and will not “fly” in the air.

When you should give your cockatiel a bath?

You can give a bath to your cockatiel in daily basis. Or maybe about 2 times a week. however, you have to observe the weather condition to do this. In Kuala Lumpur, the weather is hot all the time (few exception in November to early January). Therefore, bathing is good to your birds. You should give bath to your cockatiel in the morning. I do this at about 11:00 am in the morning, this is because it is not very cold and it give lot of time for my cockatiel to dry before evening.

How to bath them?

I use a water spray to bath my cockatiel. Adjust the spray for a fine moisture and spray them toward the birds. My cockatiel is use to them therefore they will come nearer and will spread their wing when I do this.

When you do this, avoid spray water directly to their face. This is because, if the water get into their eyes, they will feel irritate, and therefore may not give their co-operation next time.

Currently I found that there are some spray in the market which is design for this purpose. You can buy this spray and use it to get more result. I guest the spray is more effective and have extra material to make cockatiel plumage more beautiful. However, for me I found that plain water also not too bad for this purpose. I would like to not it here that you should not using any detergent or any other cleaning chemical for this purpose as it may harm your cockatiel.
