Hi Irwan,

In Malaysia, I haven't heard anyone (private) success in breeding this species... I believed that most of the bird here is wild cought only...

However, I found any, I will definitely post it here.. :D

p/s: I know it is late but 'welcome to the forum'

Hi Tanim,

Yes, please update me if you have any news. I have a friend in Pontianak, Indonesia who is also a breeder. He is trying to breed Straw-headed bulbul but no luck yet. I sometimes travel to Malaysia but I never heard Straw-headed bulbul singing in the forest. If you look at P.Ramlee movie title "Anak Bapak", a session during P.Ramlee in a rubber plantation forest, there you will hear the singing of STraw-headed bulbul. This shows that Straw-headed bulbul are still available near to human but now Straw-headed bulbuls are very deep in the forest.

Hi Frens...

This is a little notes might help Frens...

Did you mean the straw headed bulbul is check in Malasyia or Cucak Rowo in Indonesia ? If it is, in Indonesia it was common breeding this birds. In the market, difficult to find from forest catch, usually from breeder with a ring on the feet.
It is easier to breed "Cucak Rowo" than Murai batu or shama.

First, to distinguish male from female. More easier if we get them from breeder coz they are separated or marked by their rings. Male has ring at right feet whilst the female at left. But, from baby to adult birds, we shall wait until they are in at least 2 years old, a long time waiting.
From forest catch, we need experience to distinguish male from female, also we really don't know what age they are. More untamed...!

Assume we have the pair in hand;
Put them in the separated cages, starts not to show them face to face to each other.
If they sing to each other, observe is the tune "call and asnwers" ?. Male and female tune... not male to male tune or female to female tune. This is can be distinguish by the "words" like human, example... call: "Yes..." answered by: "No..." so we can hear their sing : Yes...No... Yes...No.
Not: Yes....Yes... or No....No.... (difficult to explain but easy in fact), and both should be singing.

Next. Put them close side by side still in the separeted cages. They would be more agresive to each other, vibrate their wings and singing. Stick out their tongue. Keep the cages apart coz if very close there is possibility immediately fight.

Observe 2-3 days... if the symptons persistant, put the cages touching side by side, preferred lately afternoon when they going to sleep. If they ready to mate, they will sleep side by side even in the separated cages. Just make sure the perches are parallel or straight to each other so they could stay side by side at the ends of the each perches.

They are ready moved to aviary. Best time to release them into aviary is afternoon, so the possibility to fight is reduced. In daylight, observe the aviary coz suddently could be fight, if they fight, just spray them with much water.

Before, we should prepared all aviary staff before releasing them in. Put at least 2 or 3 nest boxes or alike. Better if the aviary is closed from all side except at top side. Prepare small hole for observation. Avoid human or animal travelling around the aviary.
Feed them with cricket (minimum 20-30) and banana.

Just wait... if we are lucky... in one week they will mate. Eggs will hatch in 14 days. Further... good luck...

Cheers
