Damaged feathers

If like what it was mentioned that the follicles were damaged i am thinking it will be dreadful to have them released especially when they can't even fly so how can they possibly survive?I do have a friend who was experiencing all this problems on damaged follicles on his birds still can't get a cure and his birds still in such conditions for years
