Goldfinch cross

This is to discuss any other hardbill species which I haven't create specific topic for it. Discuss them here first and I will create a subtopic for it if got lots of people interested in it. :)

The problem with using a big aviary to breed finches is how to remove the chicks.
Since the mother is sitting on a second clutch, swatting around with a net is out of the question.
Grabbing it at night in the dark also pose a threat to the brooding hen.
So, I fabricated a simple trap that is manually activated. Auto activation is also out of the question as it may not be the targeted bird.




Then I hang the trap by the door and wait. The food that got them interested was Niger Seeds.
At first the Goldfinch came and ate. The activity attracted the fledgling.... which promptly hopped in after the Goldfinch left.
That is when I pull the string and the trap door drops down to shut off the exit.
